Samhain & Halloween: A Season of Remembrance, Magic, and Connection
Samhain & Halloween: A Season of Remembrance, Magic, and Connection
By Three Moons Three Souls
There is something special about the final days of October.
The evenings arrive a little earlier. Leaves gather along quiet pathways, pumpkins brighten our doorsteps, and familiar stories find their way back into our homes. Some of us are preparing costumes and filling bowls with treats. Others are lighting candles, remembering loved ones, or making space for reflection.
For many, this season holds room for all of these things.
At Three Moons Three Souls, we welcome the opportunity to enjoy Halloween’s playful spirit while exploring the meaning Samhain holds for those who observe it.
The Seasonal Meaning of Samhain
Samhain has deep roots in Gaelic seasonal tradition. In Ireland, November 1 marked the beginning of winter, with its eve celebrated on October 31. Customs included feasting, games, disguises, and beliefs about encounters with the supernatural. These traditions form part of the rich history behind Halloween.
For many people who observe Samhain today, the season offers an opportunity to honour ancestors, reflect on the past year, and acknowledge the natural cycles of endings and beginnings.
The familiar expression that “the veil is thin” carries spiritual meaning for some: a sense that the boundary between the living and the spirit world feels closer. Others approach this time through memory, family stories, or quiet contemplation.
However we understand it, remembering those who came before us can bring tenderness to the season.
Remembering Those We Carry With Us
Sometimes remembrance arrives through something small.
A handwritten recipe. A photograph tucked into a drawer. A song that brings someone’s voice back to mind. The smell of a meal they used to prepare.
We do not always need a formal ritual to honour someone we miss. We might cook their favourite dish, share a story about them, or take a few quiet moments to speak their name.
We can also acknowledge that family histories are complicated. Honouring the past does not require us to overlook its pain. We can cherish what nurtured us, recognize what hurt us, and choose what we wish to carry forward.
There is room for gratitude and grief at the same table.
Halloween’s Gift of Play
Alongside reflection, there is joy.
Halloween gives us permission to dress up, decorate, tell stories, and let our imaginations wander. A front porch becomes a haunted cottage. A cardboard box becomes a magnificent costume. Neighbours who rarely cross paths meet over a bowl of candy.
These moments matter.
As adults, we can become so focused on responsibilities that we forget how good it feels to be playful. Carving a wonderfully crooked pumpkin or laughing through a favourite spooky movie can be its own kind of welcome pause.
We can enjoy the mystery without needing every question answered. We can celebrate simply because gathering together feels good.
What Are You Ready to Set Down?
The changing season can also invite a personal question:
What am I carrying that deserves a little attention before I move forward?
Perhaps it is an expectation that no longer fits. An unfinished conversation. A commitment that needs to change. Or the belief that rest must always be earned.
Letting go is rarely something we accomplish in one evening. Some things take time, support, and repeated choices. Still, a quiet moment of recognition can be a beginning.
You might open your journal and write:
-
What has brought me joy this year?
-
What has asked more of me than I expected?
-
What would I like to make room for?
-
What kindness can I offer myself as the season changes?
There is no need to force a beautiful answer. Honest words are enough.
Making the Season Your Own
Your celebration might include a candlelit evening, a shared meal, a walk among autumn leaves, or a house full of costumes and laughter.
You might observe Samhain spiritually, celebrate Halloween with your family, enjoy both, or simply appreciate the atmosphere of late October.
There is space for different beliefs and different ways of belonging. We can approach one another’s traditions with curiosity and respect while choosing what feels meaningful in our own lives.
At Three Moons Three Souls, we hope this season brings you moments of connection: with your memories, your creativity, your community, and yourself.
May you find comfort in the stories you cherish, delight in a little seasonal magic, and warmth in the company you keep.
Wishing you a meaningful Samhain and a joyful Halloween. 🌙🎃
With love,
Three Moons Three Souls
